April 2011
From Mike's Desk:
Now is the time to plant your vegetable garden in the high deserts of Arizona!
April through May is prime vegetable planting time for the Globe-Miami area and similar elevations in Arizona.
Warm season vegetables can be safely planted or seeded outside in April. This includes tomatoes, peppers, squash, beans, cucumbers, corn, eggplant and melons.
Tomatoes and peppers are best planted outside as established seedlings while most other varieties can be directly seeded in the garden. Vegetable gardens, raised beds and containers all need organically enriched soils with excellent drainage and a slightly alkaline pH.
With the high temperatures common to Arizona summers, be sure to plant your veggies where they will get mostly morning sun or use a shade structure to temper the sun.
Once a month an all-purpose fertilizer (16-16-16) is needed to enhance growth of your plantings.
Good watering practices are also essential to maturing quality crops. A leaky hose or drip-system is a worthwhile investment to water a garden or raised bed.
Also, don't forget to add a 2-3" layer of compost or straw as surface mulch.
Insecticides, repellents and barriers are also needed to protect your garden from predators. Constant vigilance is essential to growing quality plants!
Remember there is nothing better than homegrown vegetables for flavor and quality!
